The Usher causes the organization in the congregation to work smoothly.  This person must have a servants heart to help those coming to services.  Some of the duties include Passing out Worship Guides, escorting guests and members to their seats in a service, receiving the offering, etc.  The usher must be willing to do what is necessary to make the service work.  This includes listening to the Pastor for unscheduled items that may occur from time to time.

For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me... And the King will tell them, I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!    Matthew 25: 35-40
